Babies and Shampoo… What To Do?

natural hair care products for babies

So you’re a soon-to-be mother of a beautiful curly-haired baby. You’ve built the nursery, bought the clothes and narrowed down the names and your baby hasn’t even arrived yet. But have you given much thought to how you’ll take care of your baby’s hair through its many stages? Over the course of 12 months your baby’s hair could go from silky straight to wildly curly; non-existent to thick and coarse or any other variation. What do you do along the way? Then of course there’s the possibility of cradle cap, and eczema to be aware of. There’s a lot to master and not much time to do it.

We recommend focusing on keeping your baby’s hair clean and conditioned during the first year since you shouldn’t really be overly styling. Your baby’s hair and scalp is way too delicate for that. Use loose elasticated hair bands and hair clips to add some pizazz to your baby girl’s hair. For boys, hats are always quick and adorable ways to dress them up.

Just like our hair, natural baby hair is prone to dryness so you don’t want to wash it too often as you’ll strip it of its natural oils. Washing their hair once a week using a mild sulphate-free shampoo is sufficient. While it’s still short you can get away with running some conditioner through it to add moisture back and leaving it in for a minute or two. As their hair grows you may need to invest in a wide-tooth comb to delicately detangle with said conditioner.

Conditioning after washing their hair is key as it’ll replenish their hair with moisture and moisture is key. During the week, between washes, it’s important to keep their hair moisturized with a water-based moisturizer like a leave-in or even plain water then sealing with a very light natural oil like Jojoba, Grapeseed or Coconut Oil. Just be sure to keep close tabs on their hair and scalp. Some babies are sensitive to oils and certain products.
