A Day in the Life of Myleik Teele

Who doesn’t love them some Myleik Teele? She’s a young, beautiful, successful black woman who launched a powerhouse brand in curlBOX. With close to 29 thousand followers on Instagram, Myleik gives us snippets into her work and personal life inspiring us every step of the way! We asked Myleik to share with us her “typical” day then we asked her some questions about how she built her powerhouse brand.

I’m always on the fence about sharing my “typical” day because no two days are the same. My disclaimer is that I GO TO SLEEP! I don’t stay up late every week night, if possible, I try to get to bed before 9pm one weekend night a week. I also make sure that if I have three super packed days in a row my fourth day is loosely scheduled.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MYLEIK…

4:30am Wake up. I read emails and check social media when I wake.
5:40am Take nap.
6:48am Wake up again and get dressed for the gym. I grab an apple with almond butter and I’m out the door.
7:25am Start my workout with my trainer which always starts with a 6 minute run on the treadmill followed by stretches and another 2 minute run before we begin.
8:40am Finish my workout and drive to my office.
8:50am Arrive at my office, grab coffee and turn on the computer in time for a 9:00am meeting with our web developers.
9:00am Meeting in my office to discuss new look and feel of the new curlBOX website. I approve, make changes, edits, discuss favorite features, etc.
10:15am Chat with my intern to give her approval of edits on her project.
10:30am Chat with my assistant to talk about what she’s doing for the day. Also chat with the designer on final needs for the curlBOX Anniversary party.
11:00am Go home and shower (I know…) I have been in my workout clothes up to this point. It happens. I drive back to my office (4 miles) in time for a noon call.
12:00pm Conference call with a national brand. Discussing upcoming opportunities as well as 2015 plans.
12:45pm Leave my office for a lunch meeting.
1:00pm Lunch with the bank to discuss 2014 retirement plans for myself and employees.
3:00pm Back to my office, get an update from my assistant on happenings, etc. Read more emails.

The curlBOX office

3:30pm Conference call with global brand to discuss social media activations for an upcoming curlBOX.
4:00pm Emails, phone calls with a few members of my team. Giving and getting updates.
4:30pm Conference call with new vendor to train me on how to use their most up-to-date platform.
5:15pm I end the call because I just can’t pay attention any longer. We schedule a call to finish next week.
5:30pm More emails, phone calls, and talking to the team.
7:00pm Go home. I take an inventory list home… I look at it. I need to decide what we are going to donate to a battered women’s shelter.
7:15pm My assistant emails me an update from the web developers. More edits…
7:30pm Eat a kale salad. Go through emails. Send gifts to a few industry friends that have been promoted or have a new baby.
9:00pm Shower. Think about washing my hair but decide against it. Too tired. I’ll just have to throw my wig on.
9:45pm In bed. Read. Text. Check out social media. My Mom and Dad end up calling back to back this night.
10:20pm Night.

1. We love the new loft style office you’ve created for curlBOX! My goodness you’ll probably be working more than ever now that you have that great space. Why did you decide to take CurlBOX out of your home and into its own space?

Thank you! It was time. I avoided it because I enjoy working alone but it was time to bring everyone together so that we could accomplish more in the coming years and also allow for me to have some work/life balance.

2. What were the last 3 books you read any why did you pick them?

That’s a tough one for me. I have a lot of books open right now. I don’t finish all of my books at once. People always ask me the book question and it’s like picking favorite kids. I don’t pick books for any other reason other than the fact that I’m deeply curious. I like reading. I love information.

3. Your social media strategy has been, in our opinion, critical to curlBOX’s success. Do you have a structured social media strategy or is the process more organic?

I don’t know that I would call it a strategy but it has always been focused on a two-way exchange with our crew. Any great relationship is based on equal or greater exchange. We try to give them as much as they have given us, if not more.

4. You seem to have many strong advocates but for some obtaining a mentor is a struggle. How have you approached someone you’d like to learn from and thus began a mentoring relationship?

Mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal. It’s a “get in where you fit in” sport. Mentors come in all shapes and sizes.

I have never had to approach anyone. I always tell other aspirants that your mentor should find you working. All you have to do is get out there and do great work and you will inevitably be recognized. I am able to sit in Lisa Price’s office (of Carol’s Daugther – pictured) and speak candidly with her and ask for her best advice because she took notice of the work that I was doing. I don’t flood her email with questions. I don’t attempt contact with her every day or every week or month but when I am granted some time with her, I always make sure to make the best of it. Mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal. It’s a “get in where you fit in” sport. Mentors come in all shapes and sizes.

5. We’re loving curlBOX TV! What else can we expect from curlBOX in 2014?

Thank you! We have some really fun episodes being edited as we speak! There will be more behind the scenes business chats, visits to elite hair spas, a day in the life and more!
