Managing Your Natural Hair Through Years 1, 2 & 3

2 years of natural hair growth

When you first decide to go natural, it’s something new and exciting. You feel this sense of rush, excitement, fear, anxiety, and joy that come with drastically changing your hair, and potentially, the rest of your life. At first, at such a young age, you love the look or you hate it! There is no in between or gray area.

It’s that first stage of overwhelming feeling. You begin to get a bit self conscious about other aspects of your face that people may now notice or the big change you’ve made that may have people question your intentions and life direction; drastic but true.

As the first year anniversary comes around, you struggle. You begin to try and figure out how to make “natural” work and get frustrated because it’s not as easy as just doing permed or chemically altered hair and you can’t just take a flat iron to fix the struggles away everyday from here on out.

Styles you see on Pinterest, YouTube or Instagram like twist outs and bantu knots are either unachievable to the length of hair you have, or take you HOURS to do.

The first year you also learn a lot about yourself. You learn about the do’s and don’ts, the ins and outs, everything. You’re curious about it all, and just like a first born child, you’re careful. You do everything in your powerful to make sure you don’t screw this up.

During the second or third years, you begin to get comfortable; you get faster at hairstyles you love and get bold enough to try new ones. Now you’ve got your hair groove and you like it. You love engaging with fellow natural haired women like yourself, and there’s a confident stride to you.

Your hair is like a second born child now- you’re careful but “it happens” is a phrase you’ve come to know all too well. You’re more confident and strong in your hair choices and because of that, your life choices as well. The sass meter is high on you, and it’s not stopping anytime soon. You are your own woman and you’re proud of it!

From here on out, you’re a bit lazy but here and there, you get inspirational from all kinds of people and places. You’re quick to know what your hair wants and needs and aren’t afraid to open doors to new products and lifestyles for the betterment of your hair.

You walk with a powerful stride and you’re proud to rock your fro, curls, locs, twists, all of it! You like to encourage others to do the same and look back and realize, if you had to do it all again, you would in a heartbeat.
